CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Smiling Slimeballs

Brian looked around him. They’d taken one step past the doorway leading from the kappa cave and found themselves in the middle of a desert. Another snotty sign welcomed them.

Welcome to Level Four. Walk the desert if you want to find me. Or turn around. That’s a much better idea.

“This leaf collector was a real smart-aleck,” said Brian. “I don’t suppose either of you can shift into a camel?”

Regor and Sapphire both shook their heads.

“Couldn’t we just fly?” asked Anna. “One of us could ride on Regor’s gryphon and one of us could fly on Sapphire’s pegacorn. Dibs on the pegacorn.”

“Good idea,” said Regor, shifting into his gryphon form. Sapphire shifted into her pegacorn and knelt so Anna could climb onto her back. Brian scrambled onto Regor.

“Ready?” asked Sapphire, though it was hard to talk with horse lips, so it sounded more like “Brreabreee?”

Anna gripped on to Sapphire’s mane. “Let’s go!” She kicked the pegacorn’s sides before she realized what she was doing. Sapphire’s head spun around and she scowled the best she could with her horse face.

“Sorry!” said Anna.

Sapphire snorted.

Regor took a few running steps and then leapt into the air as Brian gripped the feathers on the gryphon’s neck and hoped he wouldn’t accidentally pluck the mage.

Anna closed her eyes and felt the wind in her face as Sapphire soared over the desert. She could feel the pegacorn’s muscles flex with every beat of her wings.

“This is the best thing ever!” she screamed over the wind.

“There’s the next sign!” said Brian, pointing. He started to slip sideways and quickly grabbed another cluster of feathers.

The pegacorn and gryphon banked towards the sign and landed. They waited for the children to dismount and then shifted back into human form.
